Teil 3: Geothermalgebiete

Für uns als Mitteleuropäer völlig neu sind die Geothermalgebiete, die Island zahlreich vorzuweisen hat. Durch die vulkanischen Aktivitäten bieten sich eine Fülle an wundervollen Motiven. Hat sich die Nase erst einmal an den Schwefelgeruch gewöhnt, kann man dort viele Stunden verbringen.

3 Gebiete möchte ich hier vorstellen:

Im Südwesten, ca. 1 Stunde vom Flughafen in Keflavik entfernt liegt Krysuvik. Ich nutze oft den Vormittag meines letzten Urlaubstages, um dieses Gebiet zu besuchen, bevor ich das Mietauto in Keflavik abgebe.

Im Hochland ca. 200km von Reykjavik entfernt liegt das Gebiet von Hveravellir. 90 km auf der Rüttelpiste der F35 sind zu bewältigen, bis man dort ist. Auf einem Holzbohlenweg ist das kleine Gebiet schnell erkundet. Auf einem schönen Zeltplatz oder in einer komfortablen Hütte kann man dort übernachten.

Direkt an der Ringstraße unweit des Myvatn befindet sich das Gebiet von Namaskarð, heute meist Hverir genannt. Vor allem die Schlammtöpfe beeindrucken mich dort sehr.

Part 3: Geothermal areas

As Central Europeans, we are completely new to the geothermal regions that Iceland has to offer. The volcanic activities offer a wealth of wonderful motifs. Once your nose has got used to the smell of sulphur, you can spend many hours there.

I would like to introduce 3 areas:

In the southwest, approx. 1 hour away from the airport in Keflavik lies Krysuvik. I often use the morning of my last day of vacation to visit this area before leaving the rental car in Keflavik.

In the highlands about 200 km away from Reykjavik lies the area of Hveravellir. 90 km on the jogging track of the F35 are to be mastered, until you get there. The small area is quickly explored on a wooden path. You can spend the night on a nice camp site or in a comfortable hut.

The area of Namaskarð, today mostly called Hverir, is located directly at the ring road not far from Myvatn. Especially the mud pots impress me a lot.
